Harrisonburg, VA Main Campus

...

Because the majority of EMU students live on or very near campus, classes are canceled only for extreme weather conditions. In the event of class cancellation because of weather, announcements will be made over local radio and television stations, posted on EMU’s website and via the EMU alert system. Students should use good judgment about whether they can safely drive to campus when there are bad weather conditions in their area and classes are not canceled. Students who miss classes because of weather are expected to contact their instructors as early as possible. Faculty are expected to be flexible about making up absences.  All class assignments should be made up within a week of the missed classes unless otherwise arranged with the instructor.

, PA Extension SiteEMU Lancaster employs a site-based decision making process.  Either the building will be open and classes will be held or the building will be closed and classes will not meet on-site.  These will be Level 2 closure decisions, described in the faculty/staff handbook as Campus Closure: Inability to Conduct Business.

In the event of class cancellation because of a closure, faculty may elect to meet with students online. Whether or not students are expected to meet online in cases of campus closure will need to be communicated by each faculty or program director.

Decision making by the associate provost will include the following:

  • Evaluation of current weather conditions

  • Evaluation of Radar indications

  • Review of PennDot 511 winter road conditions report

  • Consultation with program directors whose classes will be impacted

  • Consultation with the director of operations

Morning and afternoon delay and closing decisions will be made by 6:00 am.  Evening delay or closing decisions will be made by 2:00 pm.

At times, there may be inclement weather that does not warrant campus closure. For such events, when staff and faculty are expected to be on duty, provision is made for individuals to exercise good judgment with regard to safety and their personal situation.  If a faculty member feels it is unsafe to come to the site, you may, after consulting with your program director, reschedule class or facilitate an online class session.  If a student feels it is unsafe to come to the site from their location, you will need to consulting with your instructor to make up any assignments within a week of the missed class.
