The university is authorized by name to operate by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

EMU's undergraduate program in nursing is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, and both undergraduate and master's programs are accredited by the Virginia Board of Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The teacher education department at Eastern Mennonite University is NCATE accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), www.caepnet.org. This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs. CAEP is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teachers. However, the accreditation does not

individual education courses that the institution offers to P-12 educators for professional development, re-licensure, or other purposes. All licensure programs are approved by the Virginia Department of Education. The English as a second language and reading specialist programs at EMU Lancaster are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
