SPAN 303 Dictatorships and Social Movements (3 SH)

This conversational course explores the dictatorships and social movements surrounding the Mexican Revolution, Cuban Revolution, The Spanish Civil War, and the dictatorships of the Southern Cone, and others. Students will examine the sociohistorical circumstances that lead to dictatorship, characteristics of dictatorships, and the various methods activists took up to denounce them and free their countries from oppression. Through a deep understanding of these histories, students will question the nature of democracy and evaluate the post- dictatorship societies. Prerequisite: SPAN 220 or consent of instructor.
