The liberal arts major consists of course requirements that provide breadth while at the same time allowing for concentrated study in a discipline of choice. Course requirements are as follows:

  • Students complete a concentration which includes a minimum of 15 SH from a single department, of which at least 9 SH must be 300-400 level courses.
  • Students take courses in at least four of the six areas below for a total of at least 12 SH.  Courses cannot duplicate those taken to complete the EMU Core.
    • Creative Arts
    • History
    • Literature
    • Mathematics
    • Natural Sciences
    • Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • Additionally, liberal arts majors are required to complete a total of 24 SH of 300-400 level courses. These 24 SH may include courses from the concentration, the EMU Core, and additional disciplines as chosen. To achieve a broad liberal arts education, the student is expected to choose the remaining semester hours for degree requirements from a variety of disciplines.
