VPN Setup Instructions

NOTE: This information is for the old VPN.  Please visit the new vpn page for instructions on how to connect using the Forticlient VPN. - 3.17.20





EMU provides VPN (Virtual Private Networking) services for faculty and staff. VPN is a secure way to access EMU files and systems from off-campus using a desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone connected to the internet.

EMU's VPN services use the the Cisco AnyConnect client. Instructions follow for installing and configuring the AnyConnect client on supported platforms.

Accessing VPN

From off-campus

Go to vpn.emu.edu. The vpn client will be downloaded automatically. The following operating systems are supported: 

  • Windows 7, 8, 10

  • Mac OS X 8, 9, 10, 11

  • Linux Red Hat 6, 7 (64-bit only)

  • Linux Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 LTS (64-bit only)

Using the Cisco AnyConnect client
To connect to VPN:

  1. Locate and run the Cisco AnyConnect client on  your computer:

    • Windows users: Look for 'Cisco' - 'Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client' within your Start menu or screen.

    • Mac users: Look for 'Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client' within your Applications folder. 

  3. Within the client enter http://vpn.emu.edu/employee, then click the [Connect] button.

  4. Enter and submit your Royal username and password.

  5. You are now connected to the EMU network through VPN.

To disconnect from VPN:

  1. Locate and run the Cisco AnyConnect client on your device.

  2. Switch the VPN connection to 'Off'.

Apple iOS, Google Android or Kindle Fire devices

To install the Cisco AnyConnect client

Cisco makes the AnyConnect Secure Mobility client available through the Apple, Android (v 4.0 and higher) and Amazon application stores. find and install it as you would any other app.
To configure the client:

  1. Locate and run the Cisco AnyConnect client on your device.

  2. Within the client, select "Add VPN Connection". enter a description of your choosing and the server address: http://vpn.emu.edu/employee.

  3. Save your configured connection.

Using the Cisco AnyConnect client



To connect to VPN:

  1. Locate and run the Cisco AnyConnect client on your device.

  2. Select the EMU VPN connection profile if it's not already selected.

  3. Activate the VPN connection by switching it 'On'.

  4. Enter and submit your Royal username and password.

  5. You are now connected to the EMU network through VPN.

To disconnect from VPN:

  1. Locate and run the Cisco AnyConnect client on your device.

  2. Switch the VPN connection to 'Off'.

Accessing files over VPN

Mac OS X

EMU-owned computers running Mac OS X should have shortcuts on the desktop. If they are not available or you are using a non-EMU owned computer use the following instructions:

  1.  

    1. Download the mapping scripts here: EMU Network Drives_Mac OSX.zip

    2. Double click the downloaded zip file to extract the scripts.

    3. On the latest Mac OSX operating systems apple doesn't allow these scripts to run as they are from an unidentified developer. If you get a warning like

      “() Drive” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" or "The file is damaged" complete steps i - iv.

      1. Open the Terminal Application.

      2. The the following command and hit enter: sudo spctl --master-disable

      3. Enter your computer admin password and hit enter (note: your password characters will be invisible)

      4. Now Proceed to step d but open all of them. Once each has been opened once, use terminal again to run this command: sudo spctl --master-enable. Your computer will now be ok with running the drive mapping scripts.

    4. Double click the script corresponding to the drive you want to access:

      1. Home (P)

      1. Department (G) - will list all departmental drives you have access to.

      1. Shared FacStaff (Z)

      1. Classdata (V)

    5. Enter your Royal username and password if prompted

Windows

EMU-owned computers running Windows should automatically map the network drives that you have access to. For access from a non-EMU owned computer please see the following instructions.

  1. Download the Windows drive mapping script.

  2. Double click the script to run it.

  3. Enter your Royal username and password, click "ok". When the password prompt disappears your network drives will be available.
