In this course, we will consider the ways in which selected plays from the Western tradition elicit our laughter and our tears, sometimes simultaneously. Since much of our texts' magic lies in their performance, we will assume the roles of viewer and actor as well as reader this semester. Authors include Sophocles, Aristophanes, William Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen, Oscar Wilde, Tenessee Williams, Samuel Beckett, August Wilson, and Margaret Edson. This course is offered on demand.
