Policy Statement

Eastern Mennonite University strives to maintain a safe living, learning, and working environment. It is the intent of the University to comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and recommended practices relating to health and safety matters.

This policy is intended to help prevent accidents and injuries, increase safety awareness, meet requirements of environmental and occupational health and safety laws and regulations, reduce institutional liability exposures, and establish safety responsibilities for members of the university community.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. All members of the university community should:

  • be familiar with their safety responsibilities,

  • strive to follow safe practices at all times,

  • act proactively to prevent accidents and injuries,

  • communicate hazards to supervisors or the Physical Plant department, and

  • be prepared for emergencies that may occur in the workplace or on campus.

Implementation of this policy is specifically the responsibility of all managerial and supervisory personnel. Supervisory personnel are accountable for the health and safety of employees and students engaged in activities under their supervision. Fostering a positive attitude toward health and safety is a significant supervisory responsibility.

Responsibility for review of policies and procedures, and monitoring compliance is lodged with the University’s Safety Committee.Chap 1 - Policy Statement
