Chap 1 - Policy Statement

Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) strives to maintain a safe and secure living, learning, and working environment for all EMU community members; students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, guests, and visitors. The University intends and strives to comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and recommended best practices relating to community member health, safety, and security.

This policy statement aims to help prevent accidents and injuries, increase safety awareness, meet requirements of environmental and occupational health and safety laws and regulations, reduce institutional liability exposures, and establish safety and incident response responsibilities and processes for members of the university community.

Safety is everyone's responsibility. All members of the university community should:

  • be familiar with their safety responsibilities,

  • strive to follow safe practices at all times,

  • act proactively to prevent accidents and injuries,

  • communicate hazards to supervisors, Campus Safety and Security Officers, or the Facilities Management department, and

  • be prepared for emergencies that may occur in the workplace or on campus.

This document specifies the responsibility of all managerial and supervisory personnel. Supervisory personnel will be accountable for university community members' health, welfare, and safety while engaging in their supervision activities.

The Campus Safety Office is responsible for reviewing safety policies and procedures and monitoring compliance. The policy goal is to foster a positive attitude toward health, welfare, and safety at Eastern Mennonite University.
