This course surveys stories of Christianity, from the first century of the Common Era up to the dawn of the Protestant Reformation. It describes successes and failures, traditions and innovations, as Christians spread west into Europe, east toward China, and south into Africa. Students will consider questions Christians have struggled with and evaluate choices Christians have made. Thinking about poverty and wealth, enculturation in mission, peace and war, church and state, women and men throughout these stories will allow intersections with 21st-century Christian realities.
