There are currently fourteen paid holidays for staff members:

  • Good Friday
  • The Friday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day (Two days off creating a four-day weekend)
  • Independence Day
  • Wednesday to Friday of Thanksgiving week (3 daysThree days off creating a five-day weekend)
  • Eight Seven days at Christmas (actual dates will be determined by the calendar, but will include Christmas through January 1) (8 days) 

Staff members who are less than 1 FTE (12 months or 2080 hours) receive holiday pay on a prorated basis. For example, if the employee is .75 FTE, they receive 6 hours per paid holiday or 84 hours per year. Part-time employees (employed less than .75 FTE) and temporary employees are not entitled to holiday pay. When holidays fall on Saturday or Sunday, they will be observed on the previous Friday or the following Monday. To determine which day is designated as the holiday, refer to the EMU activity calendar.

Vacations are intended for the welfare of the employee by providing rest, relaxation, and recreation. This enables the employee to continue service at EMU with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

Vacation pay is eligible for regular administrative or staff employees who are .75 FTE and greater. Vacation will be prorated during the first year of hire and will reflect the employees employee's FTE load. Employees on an authorized leave of absence or sabbatical do not earn vacation benefits.

In the event of notice of termination, vacation time cannot be taken during the last 2 weeks of employment. Vacation will not be paid out in the event of termination. All paid leave balances will then be set to 0.

Paid Time Off (PTO) provides flexibility to employees who need to be off work for unexpected reasons. PTO can be used for events such as illness, sympathy, weather-related events, community events, or other such occasions. Employees are granted a specific allotment of paid time off each fiscal year.

An employee must request approval of vacation or paid time off in advance, except in the case of an emergency. Approval of vacation or paid time off is contingent upon the needs of the department and EMU.
