This seven-week course focusing on themes of recovery and resilience will help students establish and refine skills in reading, analyzing, and applying insights from fiction. In one of each week's two seventy-five-minute class meetings, students will discuss selected short stories by contemporary writer Ron Rash with residents of an addiction recovery program. In the second weekly class, students will gather in a more conventional classroom setting to engage Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Graded assignments will include a reading and community-learning reflection journal, two short explication essays, and a final exam.
