Panopto for Students

If you are currently enrolled in a course and part of your coursework involves creating video content and/or uploading videos then you’ll want to familiarize yourself with Panopto.  EMU has chosen Panopto as the preferred method of storing and hosting digital video content for use as part of the curriculum.  In addition to maintaining content in a secure and confidential environment, Panopto provides nice suite of editing tools and tight integration with the Moodle learning management system.

Video content can be captured using a wide variety of sources including smart phones, tablets, and dedicated video cameras.  The following instructions assume that the content has been captured and that you know where to find the recorded content on your computer and/or mobile device.  In this brief tutorial we will review two scenarios that are fairly common.

Submitting Video Content to Panopto as part of an Assignment in Moodle.

In the example below an instructor has set up the Course Assignment called “New assignment – Please read”

1) Log into the Moodle course and open the assignment requiring video content.

In this example, the student will click “Add Submission” for the assignment

For this assignment the instructor has chosen to have the student enter text.

This is where the media content can be uploaded to Panopto.

2) Click the green Panopto button to open the “insert from Panopto Window."

3) You should see a tab that says "Upload".

Make sure the correct course is listed in the drop down as any courses you are currently enrolled in may show in the list.

4) Using File Explorer you can navigate in a separate window to the Video File to upload.
Select the file and then drag it over to the Panopto screen and the video content will begin uploading (alternatively you can click on anywhere inside the dashed rectangle to open a file browser window where you can specify the video file)

NOTE: When you drag the video file be sure to drop the file in between the boundaries of the dashed rectangle. If you do not, the web browser will ask you if you want to navigate away from the page and if you click YES it will simply play the video file without actually uploading.

If you see this message (or something similar), simply click cancel (or Stay on Page) and then try to drag the video file again.

Panopto will show an upload status and then begin processing the video content.

5) When the video has finished processing, a green check mark will appear to the left of the filename.

It’s not necessary to wait until it has completely finished processing, once you see the insert button you can click it.

While the video is processing the thumbnail will display as a generic icon. When the Panopto upload utility has finished processing the video a thumbnail from the actual video will display instead of the generic thumbnail.

6) Click “Save Changes” and the “Submission Status” window will open.

7) Click Submit assignment and the final confirmation window will open.

8) Click Continue to finalize the submission.

An email typically will be sent confirming that the assignment has been submitted successfully.

Submitting Video Content to Panopto as part of a User Forum in Moodle.

Another common practice used in online/blended courses is for the instructor to ask students to post Video content as part of a user forum.  By doing this students can see video content created by other students making the course more collaborative between students as well as the instructor.

In this example we’ll review what this might look like using Panopto to embed video content within a user forum.

1) Clicking on the Discussion Topic will open the page where the student can post content.

If you are the first student to post anything to a forum you need to add a topic.

If other students have already uploaded content then you will see a list of the topics posted by each student.

2) Click “add a new discussion topic” to start a new topic where videos can be uploaded using Panopto and then embedded as part of the forum post.

This will open the new discussion topic page.

3) Enter a subject for the discussion topic and click the Panopto button to open the Panopto Window.

There are two Tabs on the Panopto window.

4) To upload existing content, make sure the correct course is selected in the dropdown list and then click on the Upload Tab on the right.

5) Using File Explorer you can navigate in a separate window to the Video File to upload.

Select the file and then drag it over to the Panopto screen and the video content will begin uploading.

NOTE: When you drag the video file be sure to drop the file in between the boundaries of the dashed rectangle. If you do not, the web browser will ask you if you want to navigate away from the page and if you click YES it will simply play the video file without actually uploading (see below).

If you see this message (or something similar), simply click cancel (or Stay on Page) and then try to drag the video file again.

Panopto will show an upload status and then begin processing the video content.

When the video has finished processing, a green checkmark will appear to the left of the filename.

It’s not necessary to wait until it has completely finished processing, once you see the insert button you can click it.

7) Type the Subject and any message you’d like to add in the post and click the ‘Post to Forum’ button.

If the video has finished processing a thumbnail from the video file will display in the forum post.

If it’s still processing then a gray generic icon will display until processing is complete.

You will be notified that you can make changes for the next 30 minutes before the post becomes finalized.

8) Click continue and the post will now be visible to the instructor and any students enrolled in the course and will display as follows in the user forum.

You will receive email notification any time a user replies to one of your posts.
